AISC Probe into Salesforce Transit Center Ills Includes Girder Design

The American Institute of Steel Construction’s group reviewing problematic built-up plate girders in San Francisco’s Salesforce Transit Center is considering the girders’ design detail—where the brittle fractures occurred. The team will also look into a similar girder failure at the SoNo Collection mall in Connecticut.

Crews Place Final Span at Genoa Bridge Replacement

A little over 20 months after the 1.1-km-long Polcevera viaduct in Genoa, Italy, collapsed and caused 43 deaths, the last span of its replacement went up the week of April 27.

Building Trades With Prefab Capabilities Step Up to Deliver COVID-19 Alternate Care Facilities

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has delivered 50 COVID-19 alternate care facilities in hotels, dormitories, convention centers and arenas with 12 more soon to be completed. A major assist in their rapid construction came from trade contractors that prebabricated everything from in-line air systems to custom headwalls for patient pods. As cities begin to prepare for when to shut down alternate care, lessons can be drawn from the rapid buildup.

UPDATE: Midwest Stay at Home Orders Extended, Ended and Updated

Midwest states with large-population, metropolitan areas mostly plan to extend stay-at-home orders, while smaller population states never had a stay-at-home order to begin with or are planning to let them expire as reported cases of COVID-19 decrease.
