Steel Core System Could Transform Office Tower Construction

A dual steel-plate composite shear-wall system, currently undergoing physical testing, has the potential to replace reinforced concrete cores in high-rise office buildings.  The system—a sandwich of steel plates filled with concrete free of reinforcing steel—provides the strength, stiffness, safety and serviceability of a reinforced concrete core but is not burdened by complex formwork, rebar congestion and concrete curing time.

According to the report, a nearly zero-energy building in the UAE is a "building with a site energy use intensity (EUI) [of] less than 90 kWh per square metre per year" and employs renewable sources to cover most of its energy use
